Southampton was the first team I saw play away and when I got near the 92 I held The Dell back to last. It was so small that I could not get ticketsfor a League match so resorted to this Cup game. In the first match I saw back in 1949 Ted Bates was playing. Chatting to some Southampton fans one said "He's only over there," and took me across at half-time. I had a pleasant   few minutes with the Southampton stalwart. Good to see, albeit at the second attempt, a suitable memorial to him.
