Nice easy train journey down arriving London in warm sunshine. Horribly overdressed after leaving Crewe with woolly hat and scarf just 2 hours before. Stripped off at St Pancras which is the most beautiful station. Nice slow stopping train to Sutton (about an hour) with sunny sights of London. Passed through Tulse Hill which my Auntie Joan remained forever convinced Gene Pitney was 24 hours from.
The Sutton ground is barely 5 minutes walk from the station and it is very nice. Artificial pitch and surrounded by a very wide concourse with about 5 steps of terracing some 15 yards from the pitch making it feel very open. And the crowd was a lovely old fashioned mix of kids and ancients with all ages in between. A nice family friendly feel to the place.
Good game too. Beautiful opening goal for Sutton followed by three absolutely blindingly brilliant saves from the Hartlepool keeper before they got the equaliser. Second half 'Pool got proper rough and there were a few spicy moments. Ref was (I thought) extremely lenient.
Then is was back on the train, a gentle stroll from St Pancras back to Euston and spot on time back to Crewe. Drove home in Vee's Volvo with the top down to end another great day out.
