Comments :
Veteran Teddy Sheringham was on target as West Ham won their first pre-season game on English soil. With a three-match venture to Sweden behind them, Alan Pardew's side took the short trip into Kent to face League One side Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium, and they made a dream start.New signing Lee Bowyer created the opening goal which arrived in the fourth minute, his free-kick so dangerous it caused Gillingham's Brent Sancho - who faced England for Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup - to head against the post. That caused panic and 40-year-old Sheringham was on the spot to fire home from close range.West Ham doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Matthew Etherington's corner, delivered from the right side, was headed home by Hayden Mullins.Gillingham pulled a goal back late on as Andrew Crofts nodded in a consolation, by which stage new signing Carlton Cole and Dean Ashton had replaced starting forwards Sheringham and Bobby Zamora for the visitors.
