Tremendous atmosphere and a good spirit between the two sets of fans. Match also played in a good spirit. Both teams each had 40,000 fans in the ground. Very loud support for both teams, Pompey fans especially so. Both teams were in the 3rd tier, but only the Barcelona derby had a higher attendance on this weekend across Europe! Sunderland in control in the 1st half, but Pompey dominated the 2nd half, having several near things, including Pitman''s excellent volley thumping the base of the post. Extra time was also more Pompey''s and they led 2-1 until 119th minute. Penalty shoot-out won 5-4 by Pompey, with only the lovely Cattermole failing from the spot. Great day to restore your faith in football.
