The day didn’t start too well – I’d had a gypie tummy on the Thursday and it still hadn’t settled so I was more than a bit worried about ‘making it'. I was also still very tired from our Amiens trip and the Friday with our girlies. But sally forth, Old man, and get it done. Besides, I’d bought all the tickets so I had to.
Luckily all the trains worked well and it was a nice easy gentle walk to the stadium through affluent Woking. Which is strange in itself because the stadium sits in amongst a very nice (and probably very very expensive) residential area.
The huge Laithwaite stand towers above its surroundings and is a sight to behold making the rest of the ground look even smaller and scruffier. But nothing so scruffy as the game itself as far as the home team were concerned.
Without any prior knowledge an observer would easily have guessed Wrexham as the promotion challenger and Woking as the relegation flirt. Both goalkeepers, however, played blinders. I saw six amazing saves, four of which were probably in the top ten I’ve ever seen. But when Wrexham went ahead it was absolutely no surprise at all.
By this time I’d relocated from the very boringly populated sitting stand to the terrace aptly names Moaners’ Corner (my punctuation better than theirs btw). And what a shock when the equaliser went in.
I just missed it as I had to get back to the station following an alert that trains were possibly delayed due to a person on the track at Surbiton. They weren’t and it was plain sailing home. And I didn’t poo myself.
Footnote: best chips ever in the kiosk under the big stand. Prettiest servers too.
