A free Saturday due to Tranmere''s cup game v Man U being on Sunday. Some appealing games particularly in the South was tempered by burnout from a few long trips recently so I decided to keep it local. The pavilions isn''t the most attractive of grounds and is quite basic however the staff were friendly and their were certainly some pluses. I bought a Cornish pasty for a reasonable £1.50 and the programme was quality at £2 (or 200 pence) as advertised on the cover which was a take on an original game between Birmingham and Tampa bay rowdies played in 1980. Whilst I was erring on wanting a home win I think Barnoldswick can count themselves very unlucky. At half time the home side were one up with a cool finish from a one on one with the away side claiming offside and a similar chance was well saved before the break. The second half was dominated by the away side but fate was against them firstly firing a penalty just over the bar before on a rare counter the keeper had his clearance blocked and as the ball slowly trundled towards the by line the chase was on and the keeper tripped the forward to prevent a probable goal. It was a double whammy with the keeper seeing red and an outfield player taking his place between the sticks 2-0, a second penalty late on put some gloss on the result but despite being down to ten men possession and chances still belonged to barnoldswick. Ironically I read that in the reverse fixture they also lost the keeper through injury and once more an outfield player had to go in goal and saved a penalty with Runcorn scoring from the follow up.
