Into the Lions den I was thrown...
A lad I knew at Uni was coming down to support Bury at Bristol Rovers. I had been going to the Memorial Ground for years and years, supporting Bristol Rugby club but had never been for football. So I decided I would go as a fervent away supporter.
We met up in one of the pubs on Gloucester Road. We ended up missing the first 5 minutes of the match due to enjoying our pints too much. As we walked in we saw the Sags score the first goal. So it was a bit downhill from there.
The Memorial Ground (it'll never be known as the Memorial Stadium to me!) is a bit of a disappointment to be honest. As a rugby ground it functions well, but even then it is a poorly thought out stadium with large bits of terrace open to the elements.
The Centenary stand was a very badly designed attempt to put some seating on the old shed side of the ground in 1988 and as such not a lot can be done with this space. The football club have now constructed a roof over the Clubhouse Terrace, but even this was done on the cheap with pillars in the way. The more modern main grandstand is also a legacy of the rugby club, who had to construct on the cheap. It only has a few rows of seats with an area of standing in front of this and a load of executive boxes along the top. It straddles the half way line meaning less capacity and restricted use of the space either side.
At one end is a temporary stand. During the rugby club's ownership, this end was empty with no provision for the crowd whatsoever due to the end of the pitch being so close to the gardens of the houses behind it.
So it's a general mishmash. What it has going for it however is great pasties.
The away fans are housed in the end section of the Clubhouse Terrace, well away from the action as it can seem! Thankfully on the day there was no rain, so we were ok.
The rest of the match was fairly miserable for the small Bury following. At 2 down some of them were calling for manager Andy Preece to resign, before things got worse as they had a player sent off. Thankfully they did get a goal back but it was mere consolation. I then had the prospect of having to walk through the sad Sags to get home.
