The rearranged FA Cup Fifth Round tie saw the game swing back and forth in typical cup tradition.
Mabbutt's third minute foul on Bryan Roy gave Ian Woan the opportunity to fire a shot past Walker from the edge of the box, but the lead only lasted for five minutes, as Sheringham flicked on Calderwood's long free-kick for Chris Armstrong to head home.
With 29 minutes on the clock, Campbell put in a cross that Crossley failed to hold and Armstrong was on the spot to convert the chance and give Spurs the lead.
Kevin Campbell and Roy were denied by a fine double save by Walker on 62 minutes, but when Rosenthal fouled Steve Stone 10 minutes later, he was left helpless as Woan hit his second goal from the free-kick to take the tie to a replay.
