On the way up to Northumbria for a holiday with House Chant, Sue and I stopped off for a couple of nights in Morpeth to make this match a feasibility and hence tick probably the most difficult ground to get to off the list.
I was expecting it to be freezing cold on the north east coast in late October but it was amazingly mild. I didn't even need a hat. We spent the morning in Seaton Sluice, taking an excellent lunch in the King's |Head (best fish ever). Then I left 'her' on Blyth seafront while I walked the mile or so to the ground.
Tucked away in the middle of an uninspiring housing estate the ground is a perfect match - uninspiring. Much the same could be said for the crowd, the team and the match. Nothing really seemed to happen or be about to happen. I get the feeling people are finding it difficult to re-kindle the same atmosphere after so long away from the grounds. And it wasn't helped here by a sparse crowd scattered around the terraces watching pretty dire football.
As Sue was feeling unwell (had been since first thing this morning) and we had a good hour and a half still to drive I left at half time without regrets.
One stand out performer worth a special mention - Spartans goalie Alex Mitchell
