Staying the weekend with Josh and Dee in Clapham so walked the 3.3 miles to the ground (1 hour exactly) through Brixton. On arrival utterly shocked to see crowds at the gates and people being turned away. Luckily I had an e-ticket and went in (after security check !!) to find a huge crowd. As reported above the recorded attendance was 3,334 and in for a nothing special National League South fixture. The place was buzzing with a very high percentage of posh types. Surprise after surprise. Nice ground with a big old style brick clubhouse/main stand running 2/3rds of the pitch. Absolutely packed like sardines. I headed for the opposite side but it was still crowded. Got chatting to a regular who told me it was always like this. he also let me in on a few inside bits and bobs. For example some of the regulars refer to the team as The Tuscans - simply because there are some Tuscany-type trees just outside the ground at both ends. He also pointed out that, at attacking corners, the crowd behind the opposition goal jangle their keys to put the goalie off. very amusing. Good game, fast and furious, made even better by the big crowd packed and up close. Josh was supposed to come and join me but couldn''t get in as he didn''t have an advance ticket. So I left at half time to join him (and Saskia) instead in East Dulwich. Then we headed back to his via the Trinity Arms and The Hope and Anchor (both of which featured in my latest novel. So warm we sat outside without coats at six o''clock in mid November. And shock in a day of surprises. A brilliant day of surprises, actually. Footnote: A funny thing. When I booked my on-line ticket I had to enter my date of birth using drop-down menus.. The year scroll went back to 1874. I wondered at booking and checked at the ground. Couldn''t easily spot any 147 year olds in the crowd. ha ha.
