Croydon Athletic and Burnham fought out a 1-1 draw at the KC Stadium this afternoon. The two evenly matched sides were not to be separated thus forcing a replay at The Gore on Tueday evening. The early exchanges saw a cross from the right elude Rory Hill for the hosts and a shot from Ryan Bird went harmlessly over home keeper Ross Flitney. The next 15 minutes was a case of both sides sizing one another up. Halfway through the half a Croydon freekick was cleared by a Will Dunlop header. Another cross from the right saw Hill appealing for a penalty after Blues man of the match Dave Tilbury won the ball fairly. Moments later Paul McCarthy had to be at his best tipping a header fro Justin Gregory over the crossbar. At the other end Bird was fouled and Stuart Swift found Adriab Sear who shot straight at Flitney. Ben Godfrey for the home team and Bird for the visitors had chances to break the deadlock before the break, both efforts were wide of the upright. Before halftime Paul Brett got a good challenge in to stop Gary Noel and at the other end Jeremy Williams was forced to concede a corner under pressure from a Swift cross into the box.
Moments after the re-start a poor back pass from Dunlop almost gifted a lead for the home side, fortunately Noel fired into the side netting. Papali found Bird who was tackled in the box – from the corner Dunlop headed over the crossbar. At the other end Bentley Graham was well wide with his shot. The breakthrough came on 69 minutes when after some sustained pressure the vall fell to SEAR who shot under the body of Flitney to open the scoring. The Blues continued to press as they looked for a second goal. Unfortunately a ball out from Croydon’s man of the match Gregory saw him get forward and pick the ball up on the right and duly level the scores.
Both sides looked to get the winner in the closing stages without any success. A good few minutes was added on at the end by referee Mr Power who was instrumental in letting the football flow throughout and found no reason to bring out his little black book.
