Sunday, 11 August, 2002, Slick Arsenal win Shield Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva added the Community Shield to his summer trophy collection as the midfielder scored on his Arsenal debut to sink Liverpool. But Gilberto made the breakthrough when he strolled on to Dennis Bergkamp's pull-back and lashed a low left-foot shot through the legs of Dudek. It was hard luck on Dudek, who had kept Liverpool on level terms with a string of fine saves, most notably a hat-trick of stops midway through the first half. The Polish keeper, who endured a miserable World Cup in Korea, pushed away Thierry Henry's deflected shot at full stretch, then stayed alert to block twice from Dennis Bergkamp who was left shaking his head in disbelief. Bergkamp had already seen a volley blocked at close range by Abel Xavier, while Sol Campbell should have done better than to flick a header wide inside five minutes as Arsenal bossed the opening exchanges. Liverpool adopted a bold attacking stance, with Senagal World Cup star El Hadji Diouf starting just behind England pair Michael Owen and Emile Heskey. But they found chances difficult to come by. Heskey had the best of them, but saw his low shot comfortably blocked by David Seaman after Owen's pass had opened up the Gunners defence. In fact, there were more yellow cards than chances in a first half littered with petty bookings. Referee Alan Wiley set the tone after just five minutes, booking Steven Gerrard for sliding in on Patrick Vieira. "We gave them too much respect" - Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier And Gerrard was lucky not to see red when he followed through on Henry, the Liverpool midfielder seemingly intent on releasing his frustrations having spent the summer nursing an injury rather than playing in the World Cup. Arsenal continued to look the more likely scorers after the break, but Dudek continued to keep the Double winners at bay. Henry looked odds-on to score two minutes after the break when Bergkamp sent him clear, but Henry's drilled shot was scuffed onto the post by the studs of Dudek's left boot. Wiltord was also denied by the Polish keeper but Bergkamp only had himself to blame when he screwed a left-foot shot wide on the turn after Xavier had played him onside. But the breakthrough finally came midway through the second half when Wiltord's pass sent Bergkamp clear and his drag-back was expertly despatched by Gilberto. Ironically, Liverpool had been enjoying their best spell of the game but the goal drew the sting out of Gerard Houllier's side. Diouf had claims for a penalty waved away as he acrobatically rode Vieira's sliding challenge. But Liverpool fans did at least have one moment to cheer as full back Marcus Babbel was introduced as a substitute having made a full recovery from a life-threatening illness which has sidelined him since last season's Charity Shield. Arsenal: Seaman, Lauren, Campbell, Keown, Cole, Parlour, Edu (Silva 45), Vieira, Wiltord, Bergkamp (Kolo Toure 85), Henry. Subs Not Used: Taylor, Cygan, Upson, Luzhny, Aliadiere.
