Newport County 1 Grays Athletic 4
Wed, December 15, 2004. Kick off: 7:30 PM in Matches
Match Report vs Newport County by Phil O'Reilly
Making our first visit we were impressed with the stadium, despite the running track which stopped our supporters from standing behind the goals.
Grays started the better, and within the first minute Dennis Oli raced down the right wing, and crossed the ball for Leroy to make perfect contact only to see the ball saved by the bemused goalkeeper.
On a near perfect pitch Grays started to play their passing game, only for the opposition to be content with wild clearances and root one play. Following another run and cross by Oli, the Newport defence failed to clear the ball and Leroy had the simple task of passing the ball into an open goal in the 30th minute. Newport responded with the usual long ball, which at times stretched the Grays defence just before half-time when Darren Jones hit a shot from 30 yards which just missed the target.
Play resumed with Grays in control, and saw shots from Stuart Thurgood, Leroy and Dean Brennan all going close. Newport now realised they needed to keep the ball on the ground, and despite a few attempts, with Jason Bowen (ex-Birmingham) as the play maker, they could not find a way through the Grays defence.
Dennis Oli was once again our play maker hitting a long pass down the right side for Vill Powell who had just replaced Mitchell Cole. His run caused a defender and the Newport keeper to get in a tangle, resulting in Vill calmly sliding the ball into an open goal from a very acute angle.
Newport responded with a little more controlled football, which eventually had the Grays defence off guard allowing Sam O'Sullivan score from close range. Oli was then replaced by Gary Hooper, who had an immediate impact by converting a cross from Leroy, now playing left midfield. Hooper was again on hand to calmly convert another cross this time from Vill Powell. 4-1 with some 15 minutes remaining simply saw Grays keeping possession and the Newport fans leaving in large numbers.
WELL DONE to all our supporters who made the long journey, I counted 14.
