Ryan Giggs was absent due to a calf injury, while Nottingham Forest's Darren Ward started in goal in place of regular keeper Paul Jones. The visitors rocked the Cardiff crowd by taking the lead after just five minutes. Galatasaray's Elvir Baljic was on target, taking advantage of some lax Welsh defending to advance and drive his shot past Ward from the edge of the area. However, three minutes later it was 1-1 as Cardiff's Rob Earnshaw drew the home side level, smashing a shot past Bosnian keeper Kenan Hasagic following a flick-on from John Hartson. Ward did well to deny Mirsad Beslija five minutes later, following a superb through ball by Sergej Barbarez. The half yielded few further clear chances, although Gary Speed almost put Wales in front as half time approached, only to be denied by debutant Hasagic. After the restart, Bosnia again created chances, with Elvir Bolic going close before the visitors took the lead again just after the hour mark. Baljic crossed deep to the far post from the right and Barbarez swooped to head home past Mark Crossley, who had replaced Ward at half time. Ten minutes further on, Wales drew level for a second time as Hartson saw off his marker and smacked his shot past Hasagic from just inside the penalty area. Attendance: 22,000
