Another convergence game and this time with not only Matt and Harry in tow but also his brother in law and nephew (Mark and Luca). I took the train down to Rugby and with Charlie and Matt drove to The Hive. Warm balmy sunshine a very welcome difference from my last time here (see below). A swift pint at the bar then into the ground.
Match not at all bad really. Yes lacking in genuine quality but lots of endeavour. Sadly the vast majority of whatever skill and power there was came from the opposition whose travelling supporters were excellent: noisy and humorous throughout. Anyway, the result was never really in any doubt as Shrewsbury simply overpowered a feeble Barnet side with football quality, superior organisation and greater speed of thought. The truly comical own goal from the home side was a free bonus !!!
Had enough time for a swift pint after the game then off to Watford Junction where Charlie and I caught the first of two trains back to Crewe and then on home for a couple of drinks sat around the fire pit. Don’t think either of us will ever go back to Barnet again ever ever ever.

National League

Needed a hat and still in September. On the way back needed oil-skins but more of that later. It was a 2.5 miles walk from Harrow and Wealdstone station but easy and pleasant enough. So many Indian people and weddings. There was even one going on in the social rooms at the ground meaning lots of very lovely women in spectacular clothes. But that wasn''t why I was there.
The ground itself is very plush (for non league). In fact, far far better than a lot of league grounds I''ve visited. Just a shame it was less than 1/6 full. that and the bar being rebuilt and having no back wall at all – just plastic sheets. But having seen the team play, I''m not surprised by the low attendance. They were ordinary to the point of poor. And the crowd around me were - without any doubt - the most ignorant I have ever experienced. Sometime this can be explained away as ‘excessively partisan’. Not this lot. They were just plain stupid. But having little or no knowledge or understanding of the rules didn''t stop them loudly foul-mouthing advice to the referee and anyone else within ear-shot.
It was cold too. And raining. So it was a blessed relief when the time came to leave (a couple of minutes before the end - train to catch). And the walk back was miserable. It was raining steadily the whole way which is probably why I missed the last critical turning and ended up adding an extra half mile. Then my train was a bit late and proceeded to go super slow, stopping at every station, meaning I arrived Euston with only 7 minutes to spare to catch my train home.
So, all in all, not the best day but good in parts and another one ticked off.
