MILTON KEYNES DONS 2-0 BRISTOL ROVERS Dyer 30 Platt 64 ATTENDANCE: 5,125 Rovers produced a spirited performance but lacked a cutting edge this afternoon as Milton Keynes Dons ran out 2-0 winners at the National Hockey Stadium. It was a largely even contest, with the visitors playing some neat football and build-up play, but without managing to find a killer pass to unlock a sturdy home back line. The goals for the Dons came either side of half-time, with Lloyd Dyer and Clive Platt doing the damage. Rovers started brightly, and Andy Sandell was causing a nuisance of himself from the off as he tested Adolfo Baines with an early shot that the home goalkeeper gathered comfortably. Richard Walker couldn't quite make contact with the ball as he looked to stab home from inside the six-yard box, and then Steve Phillips was called into action for the first time as he saved well from a Jon-Paul McGovern drive with Izale McLeod steering wide from the rebound. Moments later, inexperienced refereeing saw Byron Anthony penalised for what was a fair ball-winning tackle on McLeod, and the Dons were handed a free-kick in a central position just outside the Rovers box. Dyer stepped up to take the set-piece, and his brilliantly executed shot gave Phillips no chance as the ball whistled home into the top corner off of the Rovers crossbar. The Dons enjoyed some decent pressure at the end of the first half, with Drissa Diallo heading into the side-netting, and Dyer nearly scoring his second of the afternoon as he blazed over with his left foot. The second half saw Rovers once again start brightly from kick-off, but it was the Dons that had the first real opportunity to open the scoring. Dyer did well to beat his man down the flank, and after floating a good ball into McLeod in space, the Rovers defenders were relieved to see the resulting shot go wide of the near post. Sandell showed some nice touches down the wing as he cut inside his man and fired a powerful effort just the wrong side of the upright, but then at the other end the away side were once again undone as the Dons doubled their advantage. Anthony had initially done well to tower above Platt to head the ball clear for his side, but Gary Smith was first to the loose ball and after his quick run and shot was well saved by Phillips, Platt had repositioned himself well to simply nod the rebound home into an unguarded net. Sean Rigg was thrown into action in the closing stages as Rovers looked to get something out of the game, and an excellent early touch from the youngster resulted in a low cross from Sandell into the six-yard box that came within inches of finding the feet of two Rovers players. Walker tried a header from 18 yards as the Pirates became more and more desperate with the minutes ticking by, and the striker attempted another effort from distance moments later as his left-footed drive cleared the crossbar by a couple of yards. Phillips saved well from Dyer late on as the Dons looked to catch Rovers on the break, and then in stoppage time at the end of the match Craig Hinton went close to scoring as he rose unmarked to power a header just the wrong side of the right post. There were plenty of positives for Rovers after this performance, with lots of good football on show, except unfortunately where it matters most - in the final third of the pitch. Junior Agogo's absence, or that of any established front man to partner Walker, was clearly felt by the team, as for all the encouraging build-up play there was little to show in front of the MK Dons goalmouth. MILTON KEYNES DONS: Adolfo Baines, Dean Lewington, Drissa Diallo, Ben Chorley, Leon Crooks, Jon-Paul McGovern (Scott Taylor 73), Gary Smith, Lloyd Dyer, Izale McLeod (John Hastings 59), Clive Platt, Aaron Wilbraham (Sean O'Hanlon 61) Unused Substitutes: Paul Mitchell, Ademole Bankhole BRISTOL ROVERS: Steve Phillips, Ryan Green, Craig Hinton, Byron Anthony, Aaron Lescott, Lewis Haldane (Sean Rigg 74), James Hunt, Craig Disley (Stuart Campbell 74), Sammy Igoe, Andy Sandell, Richard Walker Unused Substitutes: Scott Shearer, Steve Elliott, Chris Carruthers REFEREE: Mr Rob Lewis
