Comments :
Boro''s third friendly match was a visit to NCEL division one side Eccleshill United in the heart of Bradford. Again Boro took a large squad, with manager Rudy Funk looking at two new players for this pre-season in former Seadogs Mark Griffin and Adam Wilberforce. Both were on the bench and played in the second half as Rudy looks over possible additions to those players already signed. Boro began the game at a sunny yet blustery Rapid Solictors Stadium at a fast pace, and with an attacking formation of 3-5-2. Dave Kemp, Matt Draper and Denny Ingram formed the back three, with right and left wing-backs of Bill Law and Paddy Miller. The central midfielders were Joe Naylor, Tony Hackworth (who was also skipper) and Gary Hepples. Ryan Blott and Ant Lynam started up front. Scott Phillips, Luke Foster, Frank Belt and Curtis Bernard were all unavailable to play due to work. Hackworth had the best early chance for Boro, as he fired over from just outside the box. Blott struck a snap shot wide next, and Boro''s attacking line-up gradually took control. Law made a run down the right and crossed to Lynam, but he could only poke wide under pressure. Andy Howland struck an acrobatic overhead kick over the bar for Eccleshill - Tom Woodhead hardly tested in the first half. On 25 minutes Boro took the lead. Miller''s battling qualities came to the fore as his wrestled the ball from three Eccleshill players to find Blott in the box who shot across the keeper for his first pre-season goal. And four minutes later at was 2-0. Miller again assisted - his corner dropping on the head of Draper who powered the ball home. The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, as the referee spoke to several players for late challenges and petulant arguments. After the break Boro kept the same players and formation until the 57th minutes. Prior to the substitutions, Lynam had gone close with an overhead kick saved by the home keeper, and Blott had head just wide from Miller''s superb centre. Brent Leister, Joel Hartley and Chris Hewitt came on for Gary Hepples, Denny Ingram and Matt Draper, as Boro reshiffled to a 4-4-2. Naylor and Hackworth became the centre-back pairing, with Hartley wide right and Hewitt left, leaving Leister and Law central. Soon after the substitution merry-go-round continuted as James Webb and Griffin replaced Blott and Lynam up front, and Hepples replaced Hackworth - Kemp moving the centre-back and Law to right-back. Ed Eley also replaced Woodhead in goal. Webb had two good chances to scored, his first blasted over after Griffin''s run and shot was blocked, and the second a header over after Hartley''s cross. Wilberforce came on for the final 15 minutes, replacing Miller and playing left wing-back. On 84 minuyes Howland pulled a goal back for Eccleshill after Eley''s high clearance had held up in the wind and dropped tio him 30 yards out. But Boro made the win safe with two minutes left. Wilberforce skipped past his marker on the left, and crossed low. The ball deflected to Webb who struck a low shot into the corner with power. Three wins from three for Boro in pre-season. Boro: Woodhead (Eley 66), Kemp, Draper (Hewitt 57), Ingram (Hartley 57), Miller (Wilberforce 75), Hackworth (c) (Hepples 63), Naylor, Hepples (Leister 57), Blott (Griffin 57), Lynam (Webb 63), Law.
