| In a town dominated by its rugby league team the football team were very much in their shadow, and marginalised, literally, as their ground was 3 miles out of town next to St Helens Junction railway station, and a massive scrapyard. It was also overshadowed by the Bold Colliery, just across the railway line.
Very small ground and not many facilities. The team had success in 1987 when they won the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium beating Warrington 3-2.
Famous former players include Bill Foulkes and John Connelly, who both played for Manchester United, and German goalkeeper Bert Trautmann who played with a broken neck in an FA Cup Final for Manchester City.
