Most miserable moment? Rained on all game. One fan has just a tank top on his upper body! Conroy kicks Ferguson. Mooro goes in goal. Saves penalty but can't keep out rebound. Quietest train journey home.
This was a semi-final second replay after each club had won the away leg at its opponent''s stadium, West Ham winning 2-1 at the Victoria Ground and Stoke winning 1-0 at Upton Park, partly because of a stunning penalty save by Gordon Banks from his World Cup-winning colleague Geoff Hurst. There was no ''away goals'' rule back in 1972 so a third match was arranged at the neutral venue of Hillsborough, Sheffield. That finished 0-0 so it was on to a 4th match at Old Trafford, Manchester. There was another penalty save in Manchester with Bobby Moore being the unlikely hero after taking over between the posts from the injured Bobby Ferguson. Moore parried Mike Bernard''s spot-kick but the Stoke midfielder scored from the rebound. Goals from Billy Bonds and Trevor Brooking gave West Ham the lead but in injury-time at the end of the first half Peter Dobing equalised. The goal that took Stoke City through to their first Wembley final was scored by Terry Conroy. Stoke beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley.
