Comments :
Match no. 60. An entertaining game at a time when friendly internationals were still considered to be important for their own sake. The referee was Mr Kreitlin of West Germany, the man who had sent off Rattin of Argentina in the World Cup quarter-final v England 16 months earlier. Alan Ball put England in front on 23 minutes but Chislenko scored twice in 3 minutes for the Soviets just before half-time. Martin Peters equalised on 72 minutes.
