Another pick-up at Rugby station and drive on to Nottingham. Pie and a pint in the (very busy) Stratford Haven before a short walk to the City Ground. For me it was special. So many years since the European Cup glory days I used to watch on the telly but the memories all still there. And it really is a very impressive ground and an extremely vociferous crowd (especially after our last match at the frequently almost silent Etihad !!). They shout (mostly abuse) and they sing Mull of Kintyre with slightly different (and wholly unintelligible) words. My big ''doh!!'' moment was mistaking the mascot for a pirate. He had a feather on his head and I thought it was a parot before realising that even pirates don''t have a parot on thier head. Luckily Dearest Daughter pointed out it was supposed to be Robin Hood. But he came from Sherwood Forest, I pointed out, drawing on my full range of historical knowledge, not Nottingham Forest. She was back in a flash, the dunce. Sherbert Forest? The next exchange was drwoned out by blaring music (not as loud as The Stadium of Light but close) of ''Welcome to the Jungle''. And so was born the enduring legend of Robin Hook, The Pirate of Sherbert Jungle. All around us the crowd moaned and grumped and sniped and swore in their (not really very nice) Nottingham accents. They bloody grumbled at everything - not really susprising seeing as how badly Forest played for 80 minutes -in between genuine low-grade potty-mouth harranging of Tony Mowbray (the Middlesborough manager). So much for respect. Although, maybe people even these days don''t take offence at being called a ''f**king pig-faced c**t''. Who can tell. Charlie (having recently returned from South Africa and safari, suggested they were as grouchy as honey badgers. And so a second enduring legend was born. The Serbert Jungle Honey Badgers. It was another great night. A funny night. Our first cold and wet one of this season. A long drive home but happy grins as we climbed inot our beds shortly before one o''clock.
