Comments :
This game was very badly advertised, and even Turkish colleagues in my Istanbul office (who were football fans) could not tell me the venue for this match on the day itself, saying it might be played elsewhere in Turkey. Oddly the match was on almost directly across the road from my office at the ground of Istanbul''s 5th ranked team, Kasimpasa. I established this by walking across there after work and finding a small ticket booth. They said they could offer me a ticket at 10 lire or 20 lire. I decided to push the boat out and went for the top price ticket. For my £4.80 I found myself in an excellent position near the half way line at a good elevation in a comfortable seat with plenty of leg-room, in the main stand. The ground is odd being very modern and well developed on one side and one end. The opposite side and end were both uncovered and quite small. Opposite me the small stand was lowest in the middle (near the half-way line) due to the presence of a tree, which the stadium skirted around. The capacity is said to be just 13,500. Given that Istanbul has three stadiums that can hold over 50,000 the choice of venue seemed odd. One possible explanation is that the match was played the day after the General Election in which the President was expecting his party to win an overall majority. The President was born near this stadium, which is also named after him. The poor election result may have been the reason that the match was not well promoted? The match itself was of a high quality, with both sides playing attractive passing football on a beautiful evening. The first half was even, with Bulgaria having the best player, Micanski (formerly of Kaiserslautern and Karlsruher), and having a shot against the bar. The 2nd half, however, was dominated by Turkey who scored twice in quick succession, the second goal coming from a comical defensive mix-up. By the 56th minute it was 3-0, and the visitors heads dropped. The biggest name on show was Arda Turan who had just joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid for £27 million. Very enjoyable game - shame only 3,200 were there to see it.
