Report: Wales gained a deserved 1-1 draw against highly-fancied visitors Argentina.
With Manchester United''s Juan Veron running the game, the Argentinians often threatened to unlock the Welsh defence but the hosts held on to secure a magnificent draw.
The South Americans went close on several occasions in the early stages particularly when keeper Paul Jones made a series of stops in an 18th minute goalmouth scramble.
Wales absorbed the pressure, and amazingly took the lead in the 34th minute. The scorer was Craig Bellamy, who headed home a long Ryan Giggs cross at the far post.
The breakthrough worked wonders for Welsh morale, and they began to push the ball around with increasing confidence.
In first-half injury time, Bellamy and Simon Davies combined to set up John Hartson, but his speculative volley from just outside the area sailed well wide.
Argentina stepped up the pace after the break. Veron almost equalised in the 49th minute, when his left-wing corner hit the angle of the bar and far post.
Six minutes later, the Manchester United playmaker produced an exquisite one-two with Juan Roman Riquelme, before striding through the Welsh defence and firing just wide.
As the pressure mounted, a great pass by Veron set up Julio Cruz and he easily beat Mark Crossley with a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net from just inside the area after 62 minutes.
However, Wales refused to lie down. With three minutes left, Hartson''s knock-down from a free-kick was seized on by Davies, who set up Bellamy. However, the winger''s angled drive from the left hit the side-netting and Argentina escaped with a draw.
