Match no. 426. West Ham went into this, their last game of the season, in 17th position with two clubs already confirmed as relegated. Unfortunately, QPR, Chelsea and Wolves, who were all below us, all had games in hand and with points desperately needed, Liverpool, who were about to finish second in the table to Nottingham Forest, were just about the last opponents you needed. And so it proved. All our rivals picked up points and Hammers were duly relegated after 20 consecutive seasons in the top division.
