| I had to resort to a friendly for this historic ground. I knew it was going to close but not the date. Various commitments, holidays, matches at Burnley meant it was the only option. the ground has been altered for Speedway etc., but it is where Ashington played.
Inside the clubhouse there were framed shirts of the Charltons, Jackie Milburn and Jimmy Adamson. In the town centre a splendid statue of Wor Jackie.
The locals fear that the club may lose something at the new ground which is out of town. At Portland locals pop in in the evenings for a pint and the place is a sort of Community Centre.
All the locals except one supported Newcastle, the odd one out, a Plastic Scouser, got plenty of stick. So he should!
