This weekend gave me a few headaches. I had decided not to go to Carlisle on the Saturday in order to do a few new grounds, this game had been on the radar for a while with it being 1st v 2nd. For anyone reading this not in the know the league runs from late February until late September and was the penultimate league game with UCD holding a five point lead. If harps could win the odds on them pinching the title would be greatly reduced with a home game against cabinteeley one they would fancy whereas UCD would be away to Longford who had beaten them 4 or 5-1 on their last outing. By chance research had shown me I could get a cheap flight from Dublin to Bordeaux early Saturday morning and its a city and ground i''d really like to visit but I had two problems firstly accommodation in Dublin isn''t cheap unless your happy to stay in a hostel and more worrying was the fact that in France they leave the final televised schedule until the last minute so their was a good chance the fixture would be moved as indeed turned out to be the case with their fixture against Nimes eventually put to a Sunday 16.00 kick off I watched helplessly as the prices increased rapidly over the intervening time whilst waiting rather anxiously. Booking my ferry midweek I had to go with stena line as Irish Ferries couldn''t offer the times I needed, It may have been cheaper, quicker and easier to fly but would entail the accommodation issue, indeed I had one eye on the Linfield game for Saturday but settled in to my usual routine with a 2am return sailing and a drive home in time to catch the supporters coach up to Carlisle after all. Tranmere rode their luck in that one before a penalty save and an OG paved the way to a 0-2 victory. As for my Dublin trip I got to try the famous Dublin coddle(sausage and mash on top of Irish stew(although according to a Dubliner friend of mine it should have had bacon and the sausages should have been boiled) before getting the 46A bus to the ground. I was honoured to have met some more good footballing folk as is usually the case including a rep from the league who was there to present the trophy should UCD win and the PA announcer who tried welcoming me by trying to get half man half biscuit(80''s band known for following Tranmere and turning down a televised gig to watch rovers play a fourth division match) tracks off his phone and regailing tails of listening to rovers games on the radio in the 70''s whilst visiting his mate in Liverpool. The game was a cagey affair before a 79th minute goal from Cowan for harps looked to be taking the title to the last game but UCD went straight up the other end and equalised through Davis and held on for the required point. The smallish crowd invaded the pitch at the end before seeing the trophy lifted and a return to the top flight.
