Long and awkward journey (2 overland and 3 underground trains each way) but everything worked perfectly so relatively easy. And only a 10 minutes dawdle from the final station to the ground. Got there so early (all contingency timings in hand) so sat for nearly an hour in The Pipe Major garden with a pint of Hobgoblin. The ground is a mish-mash of old and very old but felt somehow 'homely'. I was in the back row of the main stand (row C !!!) and nearly on the half-way line, surrounded by local people season ticket holders. They made me feel very welcome. How amazingly different from last week at Ebbsfleet where it was frosty all-round. Less than 10 miles between them as the crow flies and yet opposite ends of the universe in terms of friendliness. That's Essex versus Kent for you, I suppose. Good game too. Lots of action and endeavour with (albeit small) patches of skill. But the Daggers never looked like getting anything out the game. Gateshead should have romped home and 2-0 was the least they deserved. So I said my goodbyes to Tony (on my left() and no-name (on my right) and headed home. Another 5 trains but again all perfectly on time. A lovely day. But tiring.
