My abiding memory of attending this game had nothing to do with the match itself. The cheers and jeers of both Geordie and Pompey fans as the half-time scores went across the stadium scoreboard: “Brighton & Hove Albion 5 Charlton Athletic 0”. My first weekend away from the comforts of home (now studying at Newcastle Polytechnic). How could my beloved Addicks do that to me? And who were the Magpies going to be playing at SJP the following Saturday afternoon? Football fixture schedules can be very cruel….
