A later start than usual, it being only a relatively fast 3-train journey from Wrenbury. And being not too cold and not wet (for a change recently) it all passed quickly and without upset. Then a gentle 10 minutes walk and I was at the grandly named Impact Arena. It's not really what I would call and 'arena' and its visual impact was underwhelming but it was neat and tidy and more than fit for purpose. I managed a swift pint in the supporters club outside the ground, chatting with a couple of Farsley supporters before wandering inside. On both sides there are single story seating areas and at both ends rather massive (over-sized) terraces. To the near end seated and the far standing. It's hard to see why they are so big but somebody mentioned something about a rich benefactor in their past who had dreams of bigger things. Maybe true. I just can't be bothered to look it up. That said the whole ground was very well maintained and included another cosy home-supporters only bar inside. The playing surface - as I so often note these days - was also excellent - especially given the rain we've had recently. And the supporters around me (mostly very VERY old) were friendly and welcoming. Horrible nasty accent (Derby/Nottingham) and sometimes difficult to follow but at least I discovered Alfreton is locally pronounce 'Arftun'. The game was good too. Fast, aggressive to the point of war-like and even occasionally skilful. Home team scored within a couple of minutes of the start but even by then they looked likely to lose. And they did. Farsley were simply too fast, to robust, too big and too well organised. And, whereas over the last few weeks I have seen some outstanding goalkeeping displays this week the opposite. The Arftun keeper had a absolute nightmare, a shocker. When he dropped the bar of soap (aka ball) at the feet of the opposition striker 3 yards out I decided I could take any more. So it was a gentle walk back to the station and a couple of trains home. Shared the first with a group of (mature) Wrexham supporters chatting football all the way. And the second with a retired posh lady schoolteacher - at the opposite end of the social, educational and well-bred English-speaking scales. The hour passed in a flash. Then all I had to do was walk back from Wrenbury station and was home in time for dinner (bacon and chips) and MOTD. A very very pleasant day. Oh, apart from the Arftun manager who was foul-mouthed, abusive and aggressively disrespectful to all and sundry throughout the match. I've written to the club chairman to complain. Ha ha. Honestly.
