FRIENDLY RESULT: CITY 4-0 CHASETOWN Sun 26 Jul 2009 Cardiff City produced an efficient performance to claim a 4-0 victory against Chasetown in their first match at the Cardiff City Stadium this evening. Jay Bothroyd opened the scoring with a superb headed goal with 19 minutes gone and it was a sign of things to come as Michael Chopra doubled the lead with five minutes left of the first half. A new Cardiff City side emerged for the second half as Dave Jones chose to replace all but Ross McCormack at the break and it was Josh Magennis who got City's third with 25 minutes to go. Youngster Adam Matthews completed the rout with just two minutes to go until full time and secured a convincing 4-0 victory in their first pre season friendly of the season. Cardiff City got their pre season under way against Unibond Division One side Chasetown at the Cardiff City Stadium this evening. In a replay of the 3rd round FA Cup tie of 2008, it was the Bluebirds who had the first opportunity as trialist Maros Kilmpl's quick free kick found Michael Chopra free inside the penalty area and converted well only to see it disallowed for offside. But Chasetown responded well and almost caused a shock as Dean Perrow latched onto a loose ball in the City penalty area, only to see his headed effort saved well by City's debutant keeper David Marshall. The Chasetown striker scored 29 goals for the Scholars last year and was obviously keen to impress any attending scouts and he almost got his goal as he latched onto Richard Batchelors tame effort to slot the ball home only to see it disallowed for offside. It was a wake up call for the Bluebirds who immediately went on the attack as Mark Kennedy 's cross was flicked on by Michael Chopra in the box and found the feet of Jay Bothroyd. His powerful effort was blocked well by Chasetown defender Vaughan Thomas sparking a scramble in the box, falling to Chris Burke whose volley was saved well by keeper Ryan Price. But the Bluebirds did not have to wait long for their next chance to score and it was Mark Kennedy who created it again with a cross from the left flank. It met Jay Bothroyd who this time made no mistake as he climbed above the Chasetown defence to power the ball into the top left hand corner of the net with his head. Cardiff City 1 - 0 Chasetown ( Jay Bothroyd 19 mins) But Chasetown heads showed no signs of dropping as they responded well with a chance of their own. Dean Perrow's mazy run found Ben Steane on the edge of the area who truly tested David Marshall for the first time with a superb long-range effort. But unfortunately for the 5270 strong crowd it signalled a dip in the action for the next quarter of an hour. The game came back too life with just over five minutes to go as Michael Chopra turned Chasetown defender Richard Teesdale inside out before curling his left footed shot towards goal, beating keeper Ryan Price but not the left upright. But Chopra got his goal just a minute later as Ross McCormack's good run and shot could only be parried by Scholers' keeper Price, gifting Chopra the chance to easily slot home and double City's lead, a margin they took into the break. Cardiff City 2 - 0 Chasetown (Michael Chopra 40 Mins) (Half time) Dave Jones changed all but Ross McCormack for the second half as Anthony Gerrard and Paul Quinn made their debuts from the bench in a new look City for the second half. And it was youngster Josh Magennis who had the first effort of the half hitting a powerful effort towards goal, but it was straight at Chasetown keeper Ryan Price who saved well. With half an hour to go Magennis had another chance to score following some neat passing play between Tony Capaldi and Joe Ledley on the left wing, which allowed Ledley the space to pick out Magennis in the area. The youngster had time and the space to compose himself, before smashing the ball into the back of the net. Cardiff City 3 - 0 Chasetown (Josh Magennis 64 Mins) And City should have had their fourth of the night just a few minutes later. Peter Whittingham found himself free on the left and squared it to Paul Parry in acres of space in the box, he seemed destined to score but could only find the waiting arms of Ryan Price with his tame effort. Parry tried to make a mends with a good effort from the edge of the area as he unleashed a left footed curler towards goal, but it was saved well by Ryan Price who did well to tip the ball over the bar. It was to be the last action for Price as he departed for James Fryer and the new keeper was immediately tested as Adam Matthews ran forward to power a shot towards new keeper Fryer, but it was to hot to handle for the substitute keeper as the ball flew into the back of the net. Cardiff City 4 - 0 Chasetown (Adam Matthews 88 Mins) As Anthony Gerrard did his first ayatollah for the club, the full time whistle sounded and sealed a good first victory for the Bluebirds in their first match at the new stadium.
