AGOGO STRIKE SEES GAS WIN AGAIN DARLINGTON 0-1 BRISTOL ROVERS Agogo 77 ATTENDANCE: 3,661 Rovers' impressive start to the 2004/05 season continued this afternoon, as a second half Junior Agogo strike ensured three points for the Pirates at Darlington's New Stadium. Junior Agogo in action at the New Stadium today, where he scored his fourth goal in four games Ian Atkins' side started the game very brightly, and had created three decent chances on goal before Darlington even got started. Jamie Forrester chested a ball forward from the back into the path of Junior Agogo who shot wide of the post, and then the striking duo combined again moments later as this time Agogo found Forrester whose right-footed effort went just a few inches wide of the left post. James Hunt struck an effort just the wrong side of the post as he broke forward from midfield, before Darlington's first attempt on goal saw Neil Wainwright drag a shot wide of Kevin Miller's goal with his left foot. Forrester played a delightful ball into the path of Agogo as Rovers broke at the other end, and after initially looking to have got the better of defender Joey Hutchinson, the Darlington defender recovered well to make a superb left-footed challenge to deny the striker just as he was about to pull the trigger. Wainwright cut in from the right side before firing a left-footed effort wide of the target, and then John Anderson needed to be alert as he blocked a Matthew Clarke shot from the edge of the box that came about after a good touch and swivel from the Darlington man. As the first half neared its end, Wainwright picked up the ball in midfield before running at the Rovers defence. Steve Elliott stood firm though, as he stuck out his left foot to dispossess the Darlington man on the edge of the penalty area. Agogo saw another shot from distance go wide, and a pass from Stuart Campbell was just too strong for the Rovers forward moments later, as the visitors again threatened to split open the Quakers back line. Darlington started positively after the half-time break and it needed some stern defending from Rovers to keep the home side at bay within the opening few minutes of the second half. Clark Keltie delivered a good cross into the box that Clarke did well to control, but despite trying his best to twist and turn his way into a shooting opportunity, he was forced to play the ball back to Wainwright whose shot was cleared by Rovers for a throw-in. Christian Edwards and Paul Trollope did well to clear a dangerous ball in from Curtis Fleming that only seemed to need a touch for it to find its way into the back of the net, and then Rovers enjoyed their first attack of the half with a Forrester run that was eventually brought to a halt on the edge of the penalty area by two Darlington defenders. Darlington were given a great chance to test Miller after a menacing run from Clarke saw Anderson beaten and Elliott out of sorts, with the latter eventually penalised for scything down the Quakers man right on the edge of his own penalty area. Fortunately for Rovers though, Brian Close's free-kick went high into the stands behind the goal. With the game entering its final 15 minutes Rovers were having to absorb a good deal of pressure from the home side, but although Darlington undoubtedly had more of the ball than their opponents, Miller was rarely troubled in the visiting goalmouth. With 13 minutes of the game remaining, and almost out of nothing, Agogo unleashed a trademark effort that saw Sam Russell beaten and Rovers ahead. The goal came after a knock-down from substitute Lee Thorpe was collected by the Pirates striker, and his shot bounced once on its way to goal, before flicking up off the surface and beating the diving Russell into the top corner of the goal. Edwards and Anderson combined well at the other end to prevent an almost immediate Darlington reply, and then as the game entered its final seconds, the Quakers piled on the pressure, with Edwards and Dave Savage both getting their heads in the thick of things to get the ball clear. A surging run forward from Agogo in stoppage time at the end of the game saw some vital seconds wasted, before Darlington's final effort of the contest was hopelessly high from Fleming, much to the delight of the travelling army of Gasheads. It wasn't the greatest of games to watch but it was a gritty, determined and effective performance from Rovers, that saw another three points chalked up, and a move up the League Two table to second spot.
