PIRATES EARN A POINT AT GRIMSBY
GRIMSBY TOWN 0-0 BRISTOL ROVERS
ATTENDANCE: 4,611
Rovers produced a decent performance at Blundell Park this afternoon to earn a creditable draw in a moderately entertaining meeting with Grimsby Town.
Neither side managed to unlock their opposing defence, although there were openings and opportunities for both sides throughout the 90 minutes.
Grimsby nearly made the perfect start to the game when Andy Parkinson capitalised on a mistake in the Rovers defence. The Mariners front man stole in after John Anderson failed to clear a long ball forward, and only a Steve Elliott block managed to stop a drilled effort from troubling goalkeeper Kevin Miller.
Richard Walker had the visitors' first real chance on goal five minutes later - the former Blackpool striker was played in by the lively Dave Savage, and his curling effort was inches wide of creeping in at Anthony Williams' back post.
Thomas Pinault cracked a volley narrowly over the Rovers crossbar after a shot from Parkinson was only half cleared, and then a great run and cross-come-shot from John McDermott somehow evaded everyone in the penalty area when only the merest of touches was needed to divert the ball home.
Jason Crowe fired narrowly wide of Miller's goal after another Grimsby break forward, before Rovers came back at the other end with some good play from Agogo who found Savage in space, only for the Irishman to hit his shot just over.
Savage was involved again moments later as he threaded a pass through to Walker, and as the striker ran through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, his low shot was brilliantly saved by Williams who dived low to his left to palm the ball behind for a corner.
The first half ended with the away side very much in the ascendancy, and Agogo was holding his head in his hands after a mazy run only resulted in a shot that was aimed straight at the goalkeeper.
The second half continued as the first half ended, with the two sides creating openings at both ends of the pitch. Terry Fleming fired wide after a good move down the flank from Grimsby, and then Aaron Lescott struck a shot that sailed over the home crossbar.
Terrell Forbes prevented an almost certain Rovers goal as he cleared off his own line to deny James Hunt heading home a Walker cross, and then moments later Agogo sliced an effort wide of the target from around 14 yards out.
McDermott powered an effort three yards wide of the goal as Grimsby enjoyed a rare forage forward, and former Bristol City striker Colin Cramb made a hash of a chance that fell his way after Rovers failed to clear the ball from a cross.
Savage fired in a shot from distance that rose just a yard too high to trouble Williams in the Grimsby goal, and then in the final few seconds of the contest substitute Lewis Haldane came close to winning the match for his team, as he chased down some fumbled goalkeeping from Williams.
It was a shot from Jamie Forrester that the Grimsby shot-stopper was unable to hold onto, but luckily for the Mariners, Haldane wasn't quite able to stab the loose the ball home.
Over the course of the 90 minutes a draw was probably a fair result, with Grimsby having the slight edge in the first half, and Rovers asking more of the questions in the second. It was a much better performance from Ian Atkins' side compared to last week's disappointing display against Cambridge United, although such is the expectation on Rovers these days, an away draw against a side challenging at the top of the table is almost seen as two points dropped.
