SHREWSBURY TOWN Edwards 65 Grant 71 2-0 BRISTOL ROVERS ATTENDANCE: 5,043 SHREWSBURY TOWN: Scott Howie, Stuart Whitehead, David Ridler, Darren Tinson, Neil Ashton, David Edwards, Jamie Tolley (Martin O'Connor 75), Jake Sedgemore, Sam Aiston (Ciaran Lyng 84), Kelvin Langmead, John Grant Unused Substitutes: Ryan Lowe, Luke Rodgers, Joe Hart BRISTOL ROVERS: Ryan Clarke, Craig Hinton, Christian Edwards, John Anderson, Steve Elliott, Stuart Campbell (Ali Gibb 47), James Hunt, Paul Trollope (Lewis Haldane 69), Dave Savage, Lee Thorpe, Jamie Forrester (Junior Agogo 60) Unused Substitutes: Robbie Ryan, Elliott Ward REFEREE: Mark Warren Rovers got 2005 off to the worst possible start this afternoon, as Shrewsbury Town defeated Ian Atkins' side by two goals to nil at Gay Meadow. Two strikes in the space of seven second half minutes proved to be the difference between the two sides, as Rovers' run of six matches without defeat was brought to an abrupt end. The visitors started the match brightly, and had the better of the early exchanges with a number of shots on goal. Dave Savage forced Scott Howie into a good save as the former Rovers shot-stopper got down well to push his 15-yard drive around the post for a corner, before Jamie Forrester saw a half-chance blocked by the home defence. Forrester had another opportunity moments later, but a boggy pitch saw him fail to control the loose ball in the penalty area, and James Hunt brought out the best in Howie again as his shot from distance bounced in the penalty area, before being parried behind for a corner. Jamie Tolley tried his luck from the edge of the box as Ryan Clarke was called into action for the first time, and then Stuart Whitehead burst down the flank before sending a cross into the box that three Shrewsbury forwards failed to connect with. Jake Sedgemoor almost handed Shrewsbury the lead as half-time drew near, but his rasping effort from the edge of the box thundered against the Rovers crossbar with Clarke stranded, and Tolley's rebound was blocked by two visiting defenders. The second half saw Kelvin Langmead strike a powerful right-footed drive that crept just wide of Clarke's goal, before Lee Thorpe popped up in the box to touch an effort against the Shrewsbury post with John Anderson then seeing his effort deflected over the bar for a corner. Clarke was off his line quickly to make a fine save from Sam Aiston after the Shrews man evaded the attentions of Ali Gibb, and then the Rovers goalkeeper was called upon again as Tolley's shot from 20 yards was superbly saved as the Bristolian dived down low to his right. Shrewsbury took the lead just past the hour-mark after some good work down the flank from John Grant saw a ball into the box rifled home by David Edwards, whose clinical finish left Clarke with no chance. Substitute Lewis Haldane offered Rovers' only response as he directed a tame header straight into the arms of Howie, and then some sloppy defending from the away side saw a ball in from Sedgemore knocked home by Grant, as the Shrews man stole in front of his man to head home into the far corner. Rovers' chances of mounting a comeback were dealt a hammer blow as John Anderson was given his marching orders for violent conduct following an incident with Langmead, and with only ten men left on the pitch, a Savage strike on goal in the final few minutes was the only real effort of note from the away team in the closing stages. It was a game played on a terrible footballing pitch that Shrewsbury got to grips with far better than Rovers, and nobody in the stadium could deny that the home side were worthy of their victory.
