I went to this game with Richard Armes, a die-hard Norwich supporter who I met in my fresher year due to him being John and Will''s housemate, and Ed Green, a Forest fan friend and former member of the Creative Writing Society who got the train into Norwich especially for the game. A warm, sunny afternoon leading into a balmy evening, the three of us convened before and after the game, all three of us having organised separate seats, discussing the fickle nature of football support (myself feeling as torn between Norwich and Chelsea as I have recently, seeing more of the former''s games in the flesh this season than the latter''s). I sat in the Jarrold Stand, closest to the block containing the away support and the Snakepit. After the game, we drank in Jarrold''s Bar hidden within Wensum Lodge.
Forest attempted to match Norwich''s diamond, which was for the most part unwise, lacking the players to implement it - Guy Moussi, a more defensive minded midfielder (at least according to FM), was an energetic but otherwise inefficient carrilero. The first goal, Tyson''s, was a complete fluke as Norwich''s keeper Ruddy failed to collect a standard through-ball running into the corner of his area, unwisely electing to welly it: this led to the ball bouncing off Tyson, who instinctively jumped and turned his back, and looping into the unguarded net. The laughter at the ineptitude of the goal seemed shared by both sets of supporters, as the general feeling around the home supporters throughout the game appeared to be one of confidence, Norwich having done so well for the majority of the season. Indeed, it proved justified: Holt''s equalising header came from a freekick won by Hoolahan, who I again saw as a player far too skilful to stay in the Championship, for the most part a frantic long-ball division, and Surman''s winner came from bad marking from Forest''s defence. The second half was quieter, and the game was seen out fairly comfortably, particularly after Paul Konchesky''s late red card. Even Richard, the weathered fan who refused to get optimistic, showed signs of optimism for Norwich''s promotion.
Norwich''s XI: Ruddy/R. Martin, Ward, Whitbread, Tierney/Fox/Crofts, Surman/Hoolahan/Jackson, Holt. Lansbury and Lappin came on as subs for Fox and Surman respectively.
