This was the first of this season's long-distance trips. I set off early to give myself an hour or two in London, and got to Crawley about two o'clock. I had looked up the position of the ground, but sought confirmation from a local. He did not know where the ground was! However, I spied a Crawley Town shirt and shared the twenty minute walk in the wearers company. The setting of Broadfield is almost rural, and the ground is decidedly non-League is size though the main stand is excellent, with good sight-lines. The ends are small, but the fourth side is being redeveloped.
One disappointment was the size of the crowd, 2389, considering it was the first match of a successful team. The supporters I spoke to were a pleasant lot, all very civilised.
On the pitch, it was very one-sided. Crawley played good, sharp football and look destined for promotion. Macclesfield on the other hand were woeful, though they defended with determination and the keeper did very well. Only in the last quarter hour did they do anything that resembled football. They had a good result in the Carling Cup, but that is not the League. I fear for them.
After the game, there were buses going to Three Bridges Station, though not, as far as I could see, Crawley Station. Three Bridges has a better train service anyway.
