WEST HAM 2 (Cole 6, Kisnorbo OG 61), UNITED 2 (McCormack 59, Clayton 90)
West Ham: Green, O''Brien, Reid, Tomkins, Illunga, Collison (Faubert 59), Parker, Noble (Piquionne 82), Nolan, Taylor, Cole (Carew 67). Subs: Boffin, Barrera.
United: Lonergan, Lees, Kisnorbo, O''Dea, White, Snodgrass, Howson, Clayton, Gradel (Sam 88) McCormack (Nunez 67), Keogh. Subs: Rachubka, Connolly, O''Brien, Sam.
Referee: M Oliver
Booked: O''Dea (Leeds), Tomkins (West Ham)
United manager Simon Grayson made two changes to his side for the trip to face well-fancied West Ham. Jonny Howson returned to the centre of the park in place of the injured Michael Brown (calf) and Max Gradel returned on the left in place of Ramon Nunez.
The home side fielded a star-studded line-up that included five internationals on their substitutes bench, but United had the backing of over 3,000 noisy fans at Upton Park so there was plenty of encouragement for Grayson and his troops.
The hosts did carve out one early opportunity, but Matty Taylor headed straight at Andy Lonergan as United looked to settle. The summer signing also made two superb early saves, first to deny Carlton Cole after a long throw then James Tomkins from the resultant corner.
The next corner proved decisive, though, when Lonergan could do nothing to prevent a powerful effort from Cole to put the Hammers 1-0 up.
United''s first real threat came on 10 minutes when Adam Clayton broke from midfield and Max Gradel forced Robert Green into evasive action tipping the ball around the post.
United also won a corner when an Andy Keogh cross came off Matt Taylor and bounced just wide of the mark. Keogh also fired just wide from the set-play after Ross McCormack made a nuisance of himself on the box.
From the next corner, West Ham again failed to clear and Robert Snodgrass thumped the bar with an angled drive.
United threatened again when Gradel broke from his own half, but the home side did well to scramble the ball clear with Leeds having men forward in numbers.
United were more than a match for the home side and recovered well from the setback of conceding the early goal. Clayton was driving things forward from midfield while Gradel was a constant threat down the left.
Whyile the hosts were good with the ball, they didn''t appear the most soiid under pressure, and United were offered a route back when Taylor handled while trying to deal with a cross. Gradel stepped up to take the spot-kick, but fired wide.
The hosts were shouting for a penalty of their own on the half-hour when Cole showed good skill to get away from Paddy Kisnorbo and the striker went down under a challenge from Aidy White. Cole milked the claim by laying in front of the away fans, expressing his disappointment.
Leeds responded immediately, Gradel testing Green with a strike from distance as Leeds continued to take the game to West Ham. Gradel also won a corner when his pin-point cross was clawed away by Green as Keogh waited to head home.
There was a short stoppage on 37 minutes when Darren O''Dea received treatment after clashing with Cole, but Leeds looked to finish the first half on the offensive and another raid ended when a Gradel cross was deflected into the arms of Green.
United were unable to find an equaliser before the break, but could take great heart from a strong opening 45 minutes.
West Ham started the second half with Cole heading wide, but Leeds were soon on the attack and there were more shouts for a penalty when White went to the floor as he looked to force his way into the box.
United also carved out a great chance when Keogh got through on goal and after his shot was blocked, McCormack lifted the follow-up over the bar. Leeds also won an early corner, and Grayson''s men were applying all the pressure.
But when West Ham did come forward again, on 56 minutes, Lonergan had to get down well to smother a header from Jack Collison.
Leeds responded swiftly, Clayton finding McCormack, and the Scot''s shot bounced back off Green''s chest. Leeds also won the ball straight back and when Keogh again did well, McCormack claimed he was fouled in the six-yard box as he turned a shot towards Green.
The Scot did get Leeds back on terms, though, when McCormack finished off a great move involving Snodgrass and a stunning touch from Keogh.
It was no less than Leeds deserved, but the lead lasted barely two minutes before Julian Faubert whipped in a cross from the right and Kisnorbo, under pressure from Cole, put the ball beyond Lonergan and into the corner of the net.
It was the second own goal in as many games for Leeds - Tom Lees had put through hiw own net in midweek - and it was a big blow for a United side who were looking much the better side.
McCormack sent a free-kick over the top when Leeds came forward again, and on 67 minutes, the strength of the home squad was emphasised when John Carew stepped off the bench.
The former Valencia forward made an early nuisance of himself and Kisnorbo made a good clearance to thwart the striker. From the resultant corner, Lonergan tipped a Tomkins header over the bar. Then he saved a point-blank shot from Winston Reid after Tomkins again got up well.
As the game entered its final 15 minutes, Snodgrass had a free-kick blocked by the West Ham wall but, moments later, Leeds ere almost undone by a brilliant piece of inter-play that ended when England international Scott Parker hit the post.
Ramon Nunez came on for the final stages of the game and almost immediately he provided an excellent delivery from a free-kick, but an offside flag was raised after Keogh had lifted the ball over the top.
The Honduran also forced Green into palming the ball away after a good strike from distance. At the other end, Clayton epitomised the attitude of the Leeds side with a stunning last-man tackle on Parker to deny him a run on goal.
As play moved forwards, Clayton then sent a shot from distance over the top, and then the youngster appeared to secure Leeds a deserved draw.
Jonny Howson hit the bar after a great cross from the right and Clayton was on hand to smash the ball home for a deserved leveller.
It was a great strike from the outstanding midfielder and he wasted little time in celebrating with the 3,000 delirious travelling fans.
It was a special moment and, aside from an altercation between Darren O''Dea and Tomkins, United were able to collect a fully deserved point at Upton Park.
