First Leeds visit to Brighton's new Amex Stadium should have been an easy away trip, but problems on the train line between London and Brighton turned the journey into a minor logistical nightmare involving tedious rail replacement bus journeys along the way.
There was a slight air of expectancy among the Leeds fans gathering before the game in pubs near Brighton station on an unseasonably warm Friday afternoon in late September. The midweek Carling Cup defeat to Man U was dismissed as an inevitability - plus we'd had one more rest day than Brighton who'd been involved in a close cup game against Liverpool only two days before. Our defensive frailties were widely acknowledged, but at the same time there was general agreement that going forward things had started to look a lot more encouraging, so picking up another 3 points on our travels was not impossible by any stretch of the imagination.
Heading out to the ground and getting off the train at Falmer station it was impossible not to be impressed by the view of Brighton's new home ground: it looked majestic, and completely unlike many other new identikit flat pack grounds that have appeared around the country in recent years. Inside the ground the set up was equally impressive with plenty of space to move around, light and airy, and with top notch facilities. The atmosphere during the game was awesome and the noise levels inside absolutely incredible. Well done Brighton, looks like you got it absolutely spot on with your new ground!!!
Sadly transport to and from the ground leaves a lot to be desired though. It seems that driving to the ground is actively discouraged which means that over 20,000 fans had to rely on scheduled train services out of the tiny Falmer station to get away from the ground, and with queues not being sign posted plenty of away ended up the wrong queue for trains heading out of Brighton and therefore had to back track and end up at the back of the queue for trains back into Brighton. With trains only running every 10 mins or so it took over an hour from joining the train queue to getting back to Brighton station. Some sort of shuttle bus service or special train service really needs to be put in place to overcome this issue.
There's nothing B&HAFC could have done about the technical problems on the train line but there has to be something they can do about transport away from the ground.
Transport problems aside this really was an excellent trip to the seaside.
