Terrific match. Could only get a ticket in the home end, the North Terrace. However, this turned out to be a good place to stand, very vocal, the noise amplified by the curved roof which covered the whole end. The ground is something of a hotchpotch of old traditional stands and tempoaray structures such as you might see on a lawn at a wedding reception. The scoreboard was tiny and was about the size, and had the appearance, of a garden shed. It gave no information beyond the score and the time elapsed. The Mem is certainly a quirky ground, which is something I like to see. Portsmouth had sold out their allocation (as usual) even though this was a midweek game. Pompey started well and controlled the game for 25 mins. Then Rovers came back into it, without bothering the keeper too much. Pompey scored after 30 mins, an absolute belter from Evans, hit first time. From the start of the 2nd half Rovers dominated for about half an hour but Whatmough and Clark blocked shot after shot. Eventually on 77 mins a penalty was awarded for hand-ball, a little dubiously I thought. The sub, Lines, stepped up and buried the spot-kick, having only come on 6 minutes earlier. However, 2 minutes later he was leaving the field again, having earned a red card for a wreckless lunge on Pitman. Pompey had paid the penalty for sitting back on their 1-0 lead and now attacked the 10 men to find an equaliser, which came 3 minutes from time when Curtis wriggled his way through and scored, the ball just crossing the line before being cleared. In the 6 additional minutes Rovers pressed hard and Bennet (ex-Pompey) directed a shot to the keeper''s right. The keeper, though already going to his left, threw out a hand to his right which just deflected the ball past the post. Though wanting 3 points for Pompey I have to say I wouldn''t have minded if the ball had gone in because Rovers certainly didn''t deserve to lose the game, having had 22 goal attempts. A fortunate 3 points for Pompey, making it 12 pts from the first 4 games of the season.
