Just back from a few days in the Peak District, I''m up at 4.45 because the trains are running a Sunday service as its good Friday, and dont start till 7.00 and I need to be at KX for the 7.35 train to Doncaster. So intend to get the N3 bus from B Sth which I just miss at 5.25. Damn! I''m surprised at the bus activity so early, and I take a 261 to Lewisham station, which with little traffic doesn''t take long. Catch a DLR train to Bank with 3 mins to spare, and Northern line to KX arriving at 6.45. Good journey and very early for my train. It left from platform 0 (82219), quite full, arr at Doncaster at 9.15, having stopped at Stevenage and Grantham. Then the 9.37 (185134) to Scunthorpe arr 10.03. I went to the nearby museum, and watched a film which gave a depressing view of a declining steel town. Even M&S have moved out! Had lunch in a cafe in town, strolled around, with little of interest to see. At13.30 started the 1.5 mile walk to Glanford Park, passing the site of the old Showground, now a Sainsburys. My conc. seat cost £14, near the halway line and backing on the hospital radio booth. I was joined by Gordon, a long term season ticket holder, now retired from the steel works. He introduced me to Kenny, a blind supporter, who listens to the hospital broadcast via headphones, sitting on a bench immediately behind me. At kick off Kenny, started hollering to encourage the team, (''Come on Irons, defend, good ball McAleny''), all gleaned from the broadcast. I was getting it full blast, but my neighbours were used to it and oblivious. Gordon whispered, ''he makes up for lack of sight by load encouragement''. Scunthorpe had a few first half chances, but it was a poor stalemate. The second half was more eventful, and after bringing on Jon Parkin, known as The Beast, he scored the only goal in the 76 min. I''d kept an eye on Exeter''s Lauri Dalla Valle, on loan from Fulham, who looked quite useful up front. It had been cloudy with light rain, and the 35 min walk back to the station and waited for the 18.08 (185107) back to Donny, and the 18.45 (82227) to KX arr 20.30. Usual journey home arr 21.35.
