The 2nd leg ended 1-1 so Hammers went through 2-1 on aggregate. They then beat Heerenveen (2-0) and Metz (3-2). In the UEFA Cup they beat Osijek (6-1) before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Steaua Bucharest.
