GLOUCESTER CITY
v Forest Green Rovers
FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round
25 October 2014
On the day Real Madrid took on Barcelona in el clásico, Gloucester City took on Forest Green in what was deemed el glosico. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29757317
James Norwood’s two late goals added gloss to a flattering Forest Green Rovers victory in a feisty and battling Gloucestershire derby.
No one covered more ground than Tom Webb, City’s all-time appearance holder, who led a stirring second half charge that did everything but score.
Luke Rodgers had opened the scoring with a composed finish following a left wing move, but Tigers captain Webb flicked home to equalise.
Jon Parkin, scourge of the Tigers with Fleetwood Town the previous season, rose highest from a corner to place Rovers back ahead, before the Tigers dominated proceedings but couldn’t break through.
With the Tigers in-experienced defence tiring, Norwood was brought on and scored a fortuitous third goal before adding a classy fourth to add some glow to the Rovers win.
As was expected, the 59th derby game between the two sides started cagey as neither side offered anything special in the opening salvos.
Parkin blasted a free-kick that deflected inches wide of Jamie Stephens’ post, which opened up the game.
The tie burst into life, as Elliott Frear beat Sam Avery for pace to give Rodgers an easy tap home from six yards.
However, the Tigers hit back within 90 seconds: George Miller whipping a sumptuous free kick into the area that Webb flicked home from close range to level the tie.
The Conference Premier high-flyers took control for a second time through Parkin who had a free header from a free-kick to bury home, a goal that looked far too easy to concede.
The second half proved a different tale as the Tigers bombarded their loftier opponents, Webb flashing wide and Joe Parker forcing a brilliant stop from Sam Bennett.
City had corner, after corner, after corner but the Nailsworth side's big defence cleared and cleared.
But, with City legs tiring, the full-timers used their muscle and brought on Norwood who finished any Tigers hope with four minutes left: bundling home past Stephens.
Two minutes later, Norwood stole a march once more and tucked home for a fourth to give the visitors a resounding victory and county bragging rights.
