Tividale FC 5-3 Newcastle Town FC
It’s been a long time coming
After all the near misses and hard work, Tividale finally got their third win of the season and what a cracker of a game it was. With eight goals and numerous missed chances. This game can only be summed up as end to end.
The visitors started the brighter and had Tividale under pressure in the early exchanges and would have been out of sight but for some stout defending by the Tividale back line led by centre back Jacob Barnes and keeper Tom Turner.
Newcastle’s first chance came in the very first minute when Barnes blocked a Jordan Cole effort and then 6 minutes later Turner did well to get behind a Neville Thompson effort. On 14 minutes Turner again foiled Thompson this time pushing his shot around the post.
Tividale’s first chance fell to Chris Sterling on 17 minutes who collected the ball in the Newcastle area, rolled his marker and got his shot away but it went straight at Newcastle’s keeper David Parton. Tividale’s only changes from the great performance on Saturday was Alex Fletcher in the middle of the park and the lively Demetri Brown up front. And it was Fletcher’s delightful through ball to Desean Martin and Martin’s neat finish that put the home side ahead against the run of play on 19 minutes. Newcastle had not recovered from the shock of going behind when Chris Sterling was left far too much space in the box and the prolific scorer made no mistake in making it 2-0 four minutes later.
Newcastle needed a goal quickly and they did 2 minutes later when Tividale’s achilles heel of not putting the ball into row Z when the chance arises came to haunt them and from a corner James Askey had time to slam the ball into the roof of the net. Tividale then spent the rest of the half on the back foot but held onto the lead until half time.
Half Time: Tividale FC 2-1 Newcastle Town FC
Newcastle had the first chance of the second half when Turned another free kick from the dangerous Thompson around the post in the 50th minute. Two minutes later Craig Stevens went on a run that took him to the edge of the Newcastle area but he mishit his shot and Parton saved comfortably. On 54 minutes Tividale restored their two goal lead, when Sterling turned provider with a defence splitting pass and Brown showed the Newcastle defence a clean pair of heels and slotted past Parton. Two minutes later Fletcher was close to getting on the score sheet himself as Parton could only stand and watch his free kick whistle past his near post.
Tividale were now rampant and added a fourth a minute later on 57 minutes when Chris Rabone cut in from the left and his shot was deflected past Parton by unlucky defender Conor Hughes.
Four minutes later for the second time in two games there was controversy around a penalty. On Saturday a Basford defender was saved the red card as the officials could not decide who had committed the foul. This time Newcastle was awarded a penalty against Tividale defender Bradley Smith for what was adjudged a high foot by the referee while his assistant in a much better position tried to point out that he thought there was no offence but to no avail. Cole stepped up and made no mistake beating Turner. The penalty certainly affected the home side and Newcastle were all over them like a rash and on 65 minutes an Askey cross was met by Cole but he shot wide. Then on 68 minutes Harry Clayton made it 4-3 when his shot was parried by Turner but he could not get enough on it to turn it over the bar and it just dropped under the bar and despite two defenders covering they could not keep it out.
It was now all hands to the pump for Tividale as Thompson fired a cross that went across the face of the Tividale goal, with no one able to get a touch to it. Then Thompson nearly caught Turner by surprise with a looping cross that just sailed wide and in the last minute Leon Ashman saw his header hit the post and go wide.
Deep into injury time all of Tividale breathed a sigh of relief when substitute Troy Baker played a great cross field ball to fellow sub Matt Jukes. Jukes then turned his marker and though his shot was parried away by Parton it went straight to Sterling who side footed home. to make the final score 5-3
