Match no. 768. West Ham went into this last regular league game of the season vying with Portsmouth for the second automatic promotion place. They were level on points with West Ham having scored one goal more, goals scored being the deciding factor in the Division at this time, rather than goal difference. So Hammers needed to at least match Pompey''s result in terms of both points and goals, while Cambridge were themselves battling against relegation. In the event Hammers took the lead through on-loan David Speedie on 47 minutes but were very fortunate on the hour when what looked to be a perfectly good Cambridge goal was ruled out for offside against another player. With the news that Portsmouth were beating Grimsby 2-1, it was clear that only a win, with another goal needed, would be good enough for West Ham and it was finally clinched with a goal from Clive Allen 2 minutes from time. So Hammers gained automatic promotion to the Premier League by one goal and Cambridge were a mite unfortunate to find themselves relegated.
