Match no. 463. David Cross gave West Ham the lead with a diving header in the 8th minute. The Newcastle equalizer after 37 minutes was hugely controversial. Ref Clive Thomas (well known for making high profile debateable decisions) penalised Hammers keeper Phil Parkes for collecting a centre with one foot raised, common practice amongst goalkeepers at the time. Newcastle were thus awarded an indirect free-kick some 4 yards out. West Ham lined up their entire team along the goal line with Parkes just in front but in the ensuing melee Peter Withe scored.
