The site had been in use as a refuse tip when Wimbledon FC moved to Plough Lane in 1912. Details of the original facilities are not known but by the time that the record attendance of 18,080 had been set at the FA Amateur Cup tie v. HMS Victory on March 2nd, 1935 there were stands on each side of the ground (the stand on the south side having been purchased from Clapton Orient FC in 1925 and removed from Millfields Road), banking at the west end and terracing at the east.

Apart from patching up the south stand following war time bomb damage, Plough Lane remained unaltered until it was purchased from the council in 1959 for Ł8,250. The main stand was enlarged in the same year and, in 1960, a cover installed at the west end and concrete terracing constructed around the ground.
Wimbledon FC moved to Selhurst Park in 1991 to ground share with Crystal Palace FC, whilst Plough Lane was retained for reserve and youth teams fixtures. The ground remained extant in a derelict condition until 2002 when it was demolished for redevelopment with Merton Council proposing to establish a sports centre on the site.
