Hull City FC bought the site, a former golf course, in 1930, but very little progress was made in constructing the ground before the outbreak of WWII when it was utilized by the Home Guard and for tank repairs. Post war shortages delayed the opening until August 1946 when the facilities were composed of a seated stand on the west side, terracing around the pitch and a temporary cover over the north end.
The record gate of 55,019 was established at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Manchester United (0-1) on February 26th, 1949 and the ground saw gradual improvement in the 1950s with the installation of a covered stand (with seats and standing accommodation) at the north end and a cover over the terraces on the east side, whilst Boothferry Park Halt, the grounds own railway station opened on January 6th, 1951. Further improvements followed in 1965 with the construction of a new seated stand at the south end.
In 1982 the north end of the site was sold for the construction of a supermarket (involving the demolition of the north stand and reduction of the terracing to a few uncovered steps). The pitch size was 115 x 74 yards and capacity by the end of season 2001/2 was 15,160 with 5,262 seats. After the ground was vacated at the end of 2002 it remained standing until 2005 when the site was sold for redevelopment
