GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds" |
|
Barnsley St Peter’s FC moved from an adjacent field to Oakwell in 1888 but it was not until 1895 that the facilities included a stand. This stand quickly succumbed to a gale and, following their election to the Football League in 1898 (as Barnsley FC) and considerable ground re-levelling, the central section of the 1,200 seat main stand (later extended) was constructed in 1904. The only other alteration prior to the setting of the record attendance of 40,255 on February 15th, 1936 at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Stoke City (2-0) was the installation of a cover on the east side.
Post WWII improvements included the installation of a cover at the south end and extension of the terraces on the east side before the ground was extensively redeveloped during the 1990s. In 1993 additional land was purchased on the east side of the ground to facilitate the construction of a new 7,200 seat two-tier stand, whilst at the same time, and as a temporary measure, seating was installed at the north end. Later a new 4,508 seat stand was opened at the south end and seats provided in the main stand paddock before, in 2000, a 6,000 seat stand was completed at the north end. At the start of the 2007/8 season the all seat capacity was 23,009 and the pitch size was 110 x 75 yards.
