Sandwiched between two chemical works and abutting a railway line, Newton Heath FC opened their Bank Street ground in 1893. It was originally known as Bank Lane and had been utilized as an athletics stadium by the Bradford & Clayton Athletic Co. Initially it had little in the way of facilities but following the purchase of the lease of the ground in 1898 major improvements were made. The running track was removed, covered stands provided on the north and south sides and the Bank Street end, and extensive embankments constructed, some with concrete terracing. The facilities for the players included separate changing rooms and a pavilion that overlooked the ground from the top of the main stand. At the completion of these alterations, the ground had covered accommodation for 8,000 and a capacity of 50,000. Bank Street was vacated in 1910 when the club, now as Manchester United, moved to Old Trafford and sold it to Manchester Corporation for use as a coal storage depot for the adjacent Power Station. The site was subsequently cleared and redeveloped as a car park for the Velodrome used in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. |
