GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

South Shore FC moved to Bloomfield Road from Cow Gap Lane in 1899 and the first game played at the new ground was against the 1st South Lancashire Regiment on October 21st, 1899. At the time of the first match, the grandstand had not been built nor was there an enclosure to the pitch but a small stand was later removed from Cow Gap Lane and re-erected at the new venue in the northwest corner. In the same year, Blackpool FC amalgamated with South Shore FC and moved here from Raikes Hall.

A stand was constructed along the west side in 1900 and, by 1912, an open stand was also in place behind the north end. In 1925, the South Stand and a small stand linking the south and west sides were completed and, by WWII, a large bank (which was roofed in the immediate post-war years) had been constructed at the north end and the east side covered.

In the 1970s the roof over the north end was deemed unsafe and demolished and eventually only half of this end was available for spectators. In 2001 the west and north sides were demolished and a new 7,700 seat stand with a continuous cantilever roof constructed as the first phase in the planned redevelopment of the ground as a 16,000 seat stadium. The remaining old stands were demolished in 2003 and a temporary 1,700 seat open stand constructed on the east side giving an all seat capacity of 9.491 at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 112 x 74 yards.

If driving to ground: Leave the M6 at Junction 32. Follow the M55 into the outskirts of Blackpool and continue straight along Yeadon Way through a number of roundabouts past Blackpool south Railway Station until you see the ground on your right. A huge pay and display car park is located just across the road from the ground, which stretches all the way from Blackpool South station. It costs Ł3.50 for three hours and Ł7.50 for up to 12 hours (some of the pay machines also accept credit/debit cards).

If using Public Transport: The closest railway station to the ground is Blackpool South which you can get from Preston Rail (For those coming from the North) and is around a ten minute walk away just walk up Seasiders Way to the ground. However fewer trains stop at this station, with most calling at Blackpool North. Blackpool North station is around two miles away and a 30 minute walk to the ground. Walk down Talbot Road to the Promenades and then walk along those to Lytham Road. Turn left into there and continue up to Bloomfield Road where you turn right and the ground is in front of you (good food and pubs on this route). For anyone arriving by train at Blackpool North you get the number 11 bus from the bus station across the road. Buses to Lytham St Anne’s pass the end of Bloomfield Road (run every eight minutes) and get off at the Old Bridge House Pub (nice place for a stop) and walk down Lytham Road. Turn left into Bloomfield Road and the ground is on your right.
