GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds" |
|
The site had been in use as an orchard when Brentford FC moved here in 1904. The facilities included two stands that had been removed from the previous ground, one erected on the south side and used as the main stand and the other on the north side. Unfortunately, before a ball had been kicked the main stand was condemned as unsafe and players had to change in Clifden Road Public Baths. This stand was not replaced until 1927 but further improvements took place in the 1930s with the installation of new covers on the north side and west end and the addition of extra seating to the main stand. Following these alterations the record attendance of 38,678 was set at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Leicester City (0-2) on February 26th, 1949.
The main stand was partially rebuilt following a fire in 1983 and, in 1986, the west end was demolished, part of it sold off, and a new small two-tier constructed. Following the installation of seating on the north side the capacity, at the start of the 2007/8 season, was 12,763 with 8,905 seats and the pitch size 110 x 73 yards.

If driving to ground: From the M4
Exit the M4 at junction 2, and following the A4 until you reach Chiswick roundabout. Take the fifth exit and take the A4 westbound (going back on yourself). Continue along the A4 for 1 mile, until you reach the traffic lights after SmithKline Beecham. At these lights (with Texaco garages either side) turn left into the Ealing Road (B455). Follow the Ealing Road, and you will pass the ground on your left hand side.
From the M25
Exit the M25 at junction 12, and follow the M3 eastbound, signposted Sunbury, London. Continue on the M3 until the end of Motorway, and then continue on the A316 at Sunbury. At Richmond Circus (approx 7 miles), turn left onto the A307 Kew Road. At Kew Green junction (approx 1.5 miles), the A307 becomes the A205 South Circular Road. Continue over the bridge, and at the next set of lights, turn left onto the A315. Follow the A315 for approx 1 mile, and then turn right at Waterman's lights into Ealing Road (B455). Follow the Ealing Road, and you will pass the ground on your left hand side.
So apart from a small pay and display car park in Layton Road (first right off Ealing Road) which costs Ł5 for three hours (but is free after 6.30pm), it is street parking. I like to park at Watford Junction and take the train in quicker in and out of the ground and use the public transport below directions
|
|
If using Public Transport: The nearest train station is Brentford, which is around five minutes walk away from the ground. This is my favourite walk around the ground and fall into four different pubs on the tour these are the Royal Oak, The Griffin, the Princess Royal & the New Inn pubs all with friendly staff. |
